Cozumel Mexico Travel Tip #2 - Plenty of Sunscreen!
Important Things to Keep in Mind
Packing Sunscreen:
The island of Cozumel is located just above 20 degrees north latitude. It is well into the tropics' most intense sun and as such, it is important to note that at any time of the year, the sun can be brutal on light and unprotected skin. If you try to rush a tan, the resulting sunburn will be a terrible way to start your long, relaxing vacation.
Cozumel Travel Info Tip #3 - Illegal Drugs are a No-No.
Mexican Law:
Mexico's judicial system operates by Napoleonic Law. This means that each and every offense already comes with a mandatory sentence. Remember that Mexico's laws are very different from America's.
Mexico often uses trained police dogs at the airports, border crossings, and cruise ship docks to insure that drugs and/or bombs aren't being smuggled in or out of the country. Know their laws! If you break them, you will spend at least 6 months in a dark Mexican prison.
Travel in Cozumel Tip #4 - Money Matters
Money:
It is difficult to gauge how much money you should take on vacation. As returning guests, my group always pays for the in-house meals (which are delicious, by the way!) at the same time we book our vacation. This way, we don't have to factor in a food budget.
Including dive trips and the occasional $3 cab ride to town (but you may find it more pleasant to walk), we normally don't spend more than $150 each in a week. I usually bring about $500, just to be on the safe side.
Travel Tip for Cozumel #5 - Alcohol
Liquor:
The rule for bringing liquor in to Mexico is two bottles of wine or liquor per family.
In the past when there wasn't any wine in Cozumel, we would bring our own liquor.
Now, do note that there are a few places to find wine on the island, but don't go looking for your favorite California cabs as they don't carry them!
Cozumel Guide Travel Tip #6 - Medical Concerns
First Aid Kit:
There is one hospital and two medical centers on the island of Cozumel. There are also two hyperbaric chambers and several good doctors. Even though these resources are available to you, it can and has proven to be a life saver to bring along your own first aid kit.
Optional First Aid Kit Contents:
- One bottle of buffered aspirin
- One box of normal sized band-aids
- One box of large band-aids (these can be cut down for smaller wounds)
- One large tube of antibiotic ointment (like Neosporin)
- Two epinephrine pens (used to lessen severe allergic reactions)
- 6-12 prescription strength pain relievers
- One travel bottle of vinegar
- One travel bottle of rubbing alcohol (You can neutralize a jellyfish sting with a mixture of half vinegar and half rubbing alcohol)
This is also good for ear infections!- One ace bandage
- Tweezers
- Two inch medical adhesive tape
